Instead of giving me another book to add to my shelves, my daughter created an entire experience around my love of books. I felt deeply understood and loved by the effort my daughter put into planning my most recent birthday celebration.

My two daughters “mom-napped” me for a day to take me on a “Birthday Book Crawl,” and it was fabulous!

I was forewarned that an outing was imminent, because as much as I like to be surprised, I also like to have a plan. The day arrived, and I woke excited for an adventure. My husband helped me pick an appropriate (and quintessentially “me”) outfit the night before, so I got myself ready and headed down the stairs to find my girls waiting to get started.

It began with the reveal:

The Bishop Arts District is a lively neighborhood in Oak Cliff, Dallas, known for unique shops, great food, and colorful street art. You can explore local fashion, eat at diverse restaurants, and see a show.

This area is packed with great browsing and food options. An excellent starting point for our book crawl.

Whisk Crêpes Café and Whisk & Eggs are the creation of Parisian-born and raised Julien Eelsen in Dallas, Texas.

This place was totally cute! French bistro vibes. We all chose crepes to start the day. I had the sweet-tart Citron, but also tried bites of the dessert-like Notre Dame and the savory Chicken Basil. They were all delicious 🤤

Friendly, helpful plant store carrying popular varieties and more unusual species, along with pottery and planters.

Drawn in by pretty plants, we had to check out this tiny nursery with greenery galore and a bigger outdoor space in the back. I see you planty-plant, and I will be back.

Visit Oasis

The Wild Detectives is an independent Bookstore Bar Venue in Oak Cliff, Dallas, TX, whose aim is to encourage community-driven cultural conversation.

This small selection is obviously curated to have a little something for everyone. The space is set up for lounging and talking, reading, and enjoying a cocktail. We were there close to opening, but this gem of a hang-out spot is open late into the night. Would be fun to check the vibe later in the evening.

Some cute shops that I can’t remember the names of. There are tons of places to explore in the Bishop Arts District!

This amazing independent bookstore is located in the Bishop Arts District in Dallas, TX. This bookstore specializes in romance books from all categories.

Whose Books is your go-to destination for a carefully curated collection of books that cater to readers of all ages. We are dedicated advocates for literacy, working passionately to eliminate book deserts in the southern sector of Dallas.

I forgot to take inside photos here. 😕. Guess I’ll have to go back. 😀 We were instantly greeted by the bookseller and told of a discount that was happening. This space was friendly and open. There was a separate reading area with lounge chairs just off the entrance. A fairly robust children’s area despite the limited footprint.

Whose Books felt welcoming, and we browsed for a while before I picked a book treat: The Subtle Art of Folding Space by Jon Chu.

This is right next door to an art space (which looked exciting and also within my area of interest), but we opted to keep focused on the book crawl (for now).

This small shop hand-makes all of its chocolate offerings. We looked around the small space and opted for the Chocolate Truffle times three! After a short walk back to the car, we sat blasting the AC and enjoyed our delectable cocoa morsels. Yum!

A short drive later, we decided not to stop for another pastry 🥐 and skipped The Bread Club Dallas and moved along to more books 📚

Thirsty, we grabbed lemonades and Bobas before embarking on more books.

Based in Dallas Farmers Market, they proudly support Texan writers and independent craftsmen.

Inside the Dallas Farmers Market, this small store has a nice selection of best sellers, some cute accessories, and a fairly large section of Blind Date with a Book. I impressed (or annoyed) my kids by guessing the contents of each BDWIB I picked up.

The Dallas Farmers Market consists of a plethora of stands and shops. There was little chance we’d pass through without perusing what was on offer. We came away with a few bags–games and clothing–and a promise to ourselves of a quick return.

Bird’s Bookstore is a design-driven, independent bookstore and café located in the heart of Preston Hollow in Dallas, TX. Our shelves are teaming with books of all genres, from non-fiction to fantasy, classics to children’s books, and everything in between.

Charmed from the moment I walked in. Bird’s Bookstore is bigger than it first appears. It has these gorgeous semicircular shelves with rolling ladders that are just the stuff dreams are made of. The selection is cool too. There are the bestsellers, but also some lesser-known titles, plus some very pretty special editions (my younger daughter picked up two). We all agreed that this was our top stop of the day, and each of us left with book treats. Mine: The Library After Dark by Ande Pliego.

A quick stop for “road fries” and some much-needed H2O, and we headed home, discussing our fun-filled adventure the whole way.

I was so surprised and felt so seen and loved by this gesture! The time with my grown daughter was immensely enjoyed. I am so grateful for our shared love of books and for the effort and care that they took to put this day together for me.

• Choose 3 to 5 bookstores or bookish destinations.
• Add a favorite breakfast or lunch spot.
• Include one or two unexpected detours.
• Create a simple map or itinerary.
• Give the recipient a small book-buying budget or gift card.
• Add a snack stop.
• Choose transportation so the guest of honor doesn’t have to drive.
• Leave room for wandering.

That last point is important because your own experience demonstrates that the magic wasn’t just the bookstores. It was the curation.

You could even mention that the crawl doesn’t have to be a birthday gift. It could work for Mother’s Day, Christmas, an anniversary, a milestone birthday, or a “just because” day.
