You know when a cover is so cute you don’t even check the price before one-clicking? That was me with this book. Billionaire fake marriage? Enemies to lovers? Neurodivergent hero and a smut-reading heroine? Check, check, and check. Was it a little over-hyped? Yeah. Did I still read The Wife Situation by Lyra Parish in one sitting while ignoring my adult responsibilities? Also yes.

4.24 on Goodreads. I think that’s a little high. Over-hyped

The Cover
Cute illustration of a guy in a suit (with half his face cut off – oddly) on a mostly pink ground full signal billionaire romance. Like the inclusion of the watch and the ring, as those are key elements in The Wife Situation. There are elements like the Statue of Liberty, which hints at New York, and the hot air balloon that hints at travel or adventure, but aren’t specifically addressed in the story. This is a little weird because there were those kinds of things, just not those specific things. It kinda makes me think the designer didn’t read the book. The title has a serious kerning issue – the I before the t in situation fully touches the t, where the one after the second t has space. This just looks like an error, but the type doesn’t type that way, so it had to be on purpose. I tried to figure out a reason that they would do that, but couldn’t figure it out. This bums me out cause the title is pretty cute. The series and title type treatments look nice and seem consistent across the author’s body of work.
Interior
The Kindle edition of The Wife Situation is well formatted and even includes ring illustrations at the chapter. There is a fun counting feature on Easton pov chapters that aren’t on Lexi’s, which is a nice little touch that brings his quirks to life a bit more fully within the reading experience.
Did the design affect whether I bought the book?
Yes, I like the cute illustrated cover and fun, light-hearted title. Combined with the fact that the description was up my alley and the price was right, it was a no-brainer.
Summary
In Short
Billionaire fake marriage trope with a side of enemies to lovers, topped with some mistaken identity.
From the Publisher
The grumpy billionaire accuses me of stealing, has me fired, and now wants me as his temporary wife…I think he’s lost his mind.
Easton Calloway needs a wifey pronto, and he chooses me to temporarily fill the position. While I want to tell him to eff off, I can’t walk away from the temptation. So I do what any broke actress living in New York City would do, and agree to the terms and conditions.
It should be easy: a year of marriage, a cushy penthouse, and a spending allowance. After 365 days, I’ll receive divorce papers and a check for millions. All I have to do is pretend we’re happily married without falling in love.
Doable, right?
The Wife Situation is a billionaire, age gap (10 years), marriage of convenience romance with a happily ever after! It’s a stand-alone with open-door scenes. Included: a rich AF hero who’s a professional on the streets but a bad boy in the sheets who isn’t afraid to call his little heartbreaker my wife.
Character Analysis
The characters in The Wife Situation were well drawn and felt pretty whole. I found both of the main characters and many of the side characters to be likeable. The love story was easy to root for. The twin dynamics were entertaining. It was great to see a proud smut reader in the fmc role, and I was delighted to fall in love with the mmc who is neurodivergent. These elements added some fresh pov that felt lifelike. While I didn’t dislike Lexi, I did feel like she didn’t have a whole lot of drive or dreams or anything that made her strive. She was stubborn for stubborn’s sake and stuck in a rut. Her dreams at 30 seem pretty nonexistent. A little flaky. The story did play up their shared interests and ways of thinking that were believable. She goes from anti-love to head over heels in a heartbeat. Also, sorry you had a bad experience, but that is a bit overdramatic that one broken heart would make you not believe that any love is real.
“I hope you have the day you deserve, Easton.”
Writing Style
I’ll admit that there was a moment a couple of chapters into The Wife Situation that I wasn’t sure I was going to make it. There were a lot of fairytale references that I found to be heavy-handed, a bit off-putting. However, I decided to make it a bit of a game and highlighted the instances to tally up at the end. 13. There were a couple of overused phrases. I mean, how many times is too many to say “eye-fucking”? I think we reached it. Two uses by the same character of “that wasn’t on my bingo card” had me feeling like the writing could have been edited better. I did like some of the other elements that pulled through as they were more witty banter or inside references between characters.
Themes
Billionaire romances and fake marriage romances are always a bit far fetched, but I’m a sucker for both – as is the FMC of The Wife Situation. The themes are decidedly on-trope, but had elements that kept the story from feeling trite. Props for skipping the third act breakup and for the epilogue plot twist.
Critical Evaluation
I generally regard romances like this like popcorn, I just gobble it up and don’t get too hyper-critical of the details. As such, this is a delicious lil’ snack that has plenty of spice. However, the couple in The Wife Situation didn’t have any interpersonal problems. It was insta love – though they denied it a while to make it slow burn. Once they crossed the sex threshold, it was all sex and I love yous. Sure, there were outside factors that “tested” their love, but not really.
“He’s filthy rich, and he probably eats placentas for breakfast or something super evil.”
Personal Opinion
The Wife Situation hit the spot that I was hoping it would. While there were some writing quirks that I didn’t love, the story is good enough. I called the epilogue plot twist much earlier in the book, but was satisfied when it was revealed.
Recommendation
Unless frequent allusions to fairy tales turn you off, The Wife Situation is a fun read that meets trope expectations.
Notes
Spicy. He falls first. The author notes at the end of The Wife Situation that Easton is a neurodivergent character, which confirms my thoughts while reading.
