A remote island, a missing patient, and a psychological thriller everyone seems to know. Shutter Island had the ingredients I wanted, but did it deliver? Here’s what worked, what didn’t, and why I left wanting more.

Horror is a wide genre that includes a few different approaches. Each of them is designed to accomplish one primary goal: to scare the reader. Includes psychological, domestic, paranormal, folk, or occult subgenres.
The Bewitching Book Review: A Spooky, Gothic Mystery for Dark Academia Readers
I needed a little help getting into the Halloween spirit, and The Bewitching seemed like the perfect solution. Witches, dark academia, gothic atmosphere, three timelines, and a mysterious disappearance? Yes, please. Here’s what I thought of Silvia Moreno-Garcia’s latest spooky read.
The Forest Bleeds Book Review: I Don’t Read Horror, But I Couldn’t Put This Down
I don’t consider myself a horror reader.
Which makes it particularly funny that I requested a book about blood witches, body horror, magical science, and a creepy mansion in the Appalachian Mountains.
But *The Forest Bleeds* caught my attention on NetGalley with two words: “arcane bioengineering.” Add a blood witch and a gorgeous cover, and apparently that was enough to make me click Request.
I’m glad I did.
Rachel Kitch blends science and magic into a creepy, atmospheric story with complicated characters, dark academia vibes, and enough hopefulness to balance out the horror. I even gobbled it up in two days.
Sometimes following the thing that makes you curious leads you somewhere you didn’t expect to enjoy.
Read my review of *The Forest Bleeds* to find out why this non-horror reader is already feeling ready for spooky season.
Daggermouth Review: A Brutal, Slow-Burn Fantasy Romance That Refuses to Let Go
Some books earn five stars.
Some books earn permanent shelf space.
*Daggermouth* surprised me by doing both.
In my newest review, I’m looking beyond the plot to explore why its unforgettable cover perfectly prepares readers for what’s inside, how its slow-burn romance actually works, and why this dark dystopian fantasy left me immediately wanting book two.
If you’ve been wondering whether the hype is deserved, I have thoughts.
Pines by Blake Crouch Review: Small-Town Americana With Teeth
Pines by Blake Crouch is a fast-paced sci-fi horror thriller packed with paranoia, mystery, survival themes, and eerie small-town tension.
Book Review: House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski
Step into House of Leaves, the cult classic horror puzzle. Is it worth the hype—or just a headache? My honest review explores both.
